THE LIBERTY BELL was cast in London in 1752, cracked on the first ring, recast in Philadelphia twice, and then cracked again sometime in the 1840s in a manner nobody quite recorded. The crack is the famous one. The inscription quotes Leviticus 25:10 — "proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof." The Abolitionists adopted the bell and the verse first. The country took longer to follow.
Rendered in a minimalist, vintage-inspired travel-poster style, this piece captures the bronze bell suspended in its modern glass pavilion, the crack a dark spine down one side, Independence Hall holding the background. Bronze warm, glass pale, brick rust. A tribute to a bell whose crack is the point.
