THE KOREAN WAR VETERANS MEMORIAL was dedicated on the National Mall in 1995 — 42 years after the armistice that did not end the war. Nineteen larger-than-life stainless steel infantry figures advance in ponchos across a Mall meadow, with a polished black granite wall to one side carrying the photographic etchings of 2,400 unnamed faces from the war years. A new addition in 2022 carved the names of 36,634 American dead and the 7,200 missing.
Rendered in a minimalist, vintage-inspired travel-poster style, this piece captures the platoon of stainless figures crossing the meadow at twilight, their reflection in the granite wall, the Reflecting Pool catching distant light. Steel silver, granite black, dusk rose. A tribute to the memorial built four decades after the war it remembers.
