THE JEFFERSON MEMORIAL on the Tidal Basin is a domed neoclassical rotunda finished in 1943, modeled loosely on the Pantheon in Rome — Jefferson's own architectural taste held against him. The 19-foot bronze statue inside is taller than the original specifications allowed; the war delayed it, so they made him bigger. The cherry trees around the basin were a 1912 gift from Tokyo. The bloom rules the city for two weeks a year.
Rendered in a minimalist, vintage-inspired travel-poster style, this piece captures the dome and columns of the memorial framed by cherry blossoms in early bloom, the Tidal Basin holding the reflection, the Washington Monument pale in the distance.
