ISLE ROYALE NATIONAL PARK is a long quiet island in Lake Superior — 45 miles by 9 — connected to the world by ferry and seaplane only, closed entirely from November through April. The park has run the longest predator-prey study in science since 1958: a population of wolves, a population of moose, and a small group of scientists who keep counting. Both populations are sometimes very small.
Rendered in a minimalist, vintage-inspired travel-poster style, this piece captures the island's rocky shore meeting Superior's cold water, conifer forest stepping down to the rock, a small dock and a single boat in the foreground. Superior blue, pine green, granite gray. A tribute to a park where the population census is everyone's business.
