CAPITOL REEF NATIONAL PARK runs along a hundred-mile wrinkle in the earth called the Waterpocket Fold — a place where the planet got tired of being flat and stayed that way. Mormon settlers planted orchards in the Fremont River valley in the 1880s; the National Park Service still tends them, and visitors can pick the fruit by the pound in season. The petroglyphs predate the apples by about a thousand years.
Rendered in a minimalist, vintage-inspired travel-poster style, this piece captures red-rock domes and cliffs rising above a green-fringed valley, the white sandstone capitols catching the afternoon light. Brick red, cream-stone, and the soft green of an orchard in summer. A tribute to a fold in the world that grew fruit out of it.
