WHITE SANDS NATIONAL PARK is 275 square miles of gypsum dunes in southern New Mexico — the largest gypsum dune field in the world. The sand is not silica, which is why it stays cool to the touch even when the air does not. The dunes shift westward at about thirty feet a year. The Tularosa Basin keeps replenishing them. The basin is a closed system.
Rendered in a minimalist, vintage-inspired travel-poster style, this piece captures the white dunes rolling like surf to a low horizon, the San Andres Mountains a slate edge behind, a single yucca surviving on a ridgeline. Gypsum white, range slate, sky cobalt. A tribute to a desert where the sand is the wrong color and proud of it.
