MUIR WOODS NATIONAL MONUMENT in Marin County, California protects 554 acres of old-growth coast redwood — one of the last unlogged groves anywhere on the southern Marin Peninsula. Congressman William Kent bought the land in 1905, donated it to the country in 1908, and asked Roosevelt to name it for John Muir. Roosevelt did. Muir wrote a thank-you note. The redwoods kept growing.
